Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, commonly known as the Variegated Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a classic and enduring houseplant, valued for both its striking appearance and its exceptional resilience. Originally native to West Africa, this plant is part of the Asparagaceae family and has long been celebrated as one of the easiest indoor plants to grow.
‘Laurentii’ is distinguished by its tall, upright sword-shaped leaves, which can reach 60–100 cm in height. Each leaf is deep green with horizontal, wavy bands of grey-green, bordered with bold yellow variegated margins. The rigid, vertical growth habit gives it a sculptural, architectural quality, making it a favourite for modern and minimalist interiors.
Not only is it visually impressive, but Sansevieria is also known for its air-purifying abilities, filtering toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. Its tolerance for neglect, drought, and a wide range of light conditions has made it one of the most reliable houseplants for homes, offices, and public spaces.
Sansevieria ‘Laurentii’ – Care Guide
Light
Very adaptable. It thrives in bright, indirect light but will also tolerate lower light levels, making it suitable for offices and shaded corners. Avoid intense midday sun, which may scorch the leaves, but some direct morning or evening sun is beneficial.
Watering
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. In summer, this may mean watering every 2–3 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, leading to root rot.
Temperature and Humidity
-
Temperature: Performs well in average household temperatures between 16–26°C. Protect from frost and prolonged cold below 10°C.
-
Humidity: Tolerant of dry air and does not require additional humidity. Ideal for centrally heated rooms.
Soil and Potting
Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent compost. A mix with added sand or perlite is ideal. Repot every 2–3 years in spring if the plant becomes pot-bound, though it often thrives slightly root-restricted.
Feeding
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Do not feed in autumn and winter.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves at the base. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to maintain their shine and remove dust.
Growth and Maturity
‘Laurentii’ grows slowly but steadily, producing new leaves from its base to form clumps over time. It may occasionally produce small, greenish-white flowers on mature plants, though this is rare indoors.
Common Issues
-
Yellow, mushy leaves: A sign of overwatering and root rot.
-
Wrinkling leaves: Usually due to prolonged drought – give a thorough soak.
-
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites; inspect leaves regularly.
Background and Benefits
Sansevieria has been grown as a houseplant for centuries, both for its decorative qualities and for its toughness. It is one of NASA’s recommended air-purifying plants, helping to remove toxins and improve indoor air quality. In Feng Shui, it is also believed to bring protective energy. With its bold variegation and upright form, ‘Laurentii’ remains one of the most popular and enduring houseplants for homes and workplaces.
